It had frontal broadened jaws, semi-erect posture, and large canines.

They lived about 20-25 million years ago. Prior to Ape Men (Early human ancestors)ĭryopithecus – The fossil of Dryopithecus was discovered from the middle Miocene and early Pliocene rocks of Africa and Europe. About 25000 years ago the evolution of Homo Sapiens or man of today occurred which started spreading all over the world about 10,000 years ago. Homo Sapiens fossils known as Cro-Magnon Man emerged about 34000 years ago. Gradually, Homo Sapiens neanderthalensis appeared several million years ago. The cranial capacity of Homo erectus has doubled to 850 cm.

During the next million years, Homo erectus appeared in the fossil record. The brain of these early hominins was that of the same size as Chimpanzee. The earliest representative of the genus Homo is Homo habilis which is evolved around 2.8 million years ago. Australopithecus, the first ape-man appeared about 5 million years ago and existed until about 1.5 million years ago and give rise to Homo habilis. After 14-15 million yrs back, the Ramapithecus fossil was excavated from Pliocene rocks. It has been established that Dryopithecus is one of the oldest fossils which in turn evolved into apes and humans. The evolutionary history of primates can be traced back 65 million years.
